Social Action

Shaare Torah’s Social Action Committee engages the congregation in acts of Tikkum Olam (repairing the world) in order to address economic and social needs in our local community, Israel, and the world at large.  We encourage the Shaare Torah community to participate in meaningful activities to improve our society and help the most vulnerable members of our community. Each one of us can make a difference in repairing the world.

Here are some ways you can help right now!

Gaithersburg HELP is an organization we are proud to support. It is an “all volunteer organization that provides basic needs assistance to people and families in the Gaithersburg area.” Please visit the Gaithersburg Help website to find out how you can help.

Sophia House- We are proud to provide monthly meals for the women of Sophia House. Want to cook an entire meal or part of a meal a few times a year for the homeless? If so, please add your name to the volunteer list. If you prefer to donate and have others buy the food, please contact Ellen Rubinson, Social Action Chair.

Interfaith Works – Interfaith Works needs volunteers to continue providing food to its residential facilities. In addition to the most critical need for financial support, they are also seeking donations of hand soap, disinfectant wipes, disinfectant spray, hand sanitizer, gloves, face masks, bottled water, and non-perishable foods. For the full list of items urgently needed, please visit the Interfaith Works website. To make a financial donation, go directly to the Interfaith Works donation page.

Our events this year will include the following:

  • Operation Isaiah (during the High Holidays) – a food drive to be distributed by Gaithersburg Help to needy people in our community
  • Thanksgiving baskets and gift cards for local Jewish families in partnership with the Jewish Social Services Agency
  • First Responders Event (Presidents Day) – we bring store and home baked goods to local fire stations, police departments, and emergency rooms to thank them for their service.
  • Mishloach Manot (Purim)- our one and only fundraising event that fuels the rest of our charitable activities and programs throughout each year. Hamantaschen, anyone?
  • Passover baskets and gift cards for local Jewish families in partnership with the Jewish Social Service Agency
